The Monitor delivered a podcast for the National Security College

The Monitor joined Associate Professor and Academic Director of the National Security College, Dr Danielle Ireland-Piper, to discuss the role of the INSLM in Australia’s intelligence landscape as well as the provisions of Part 5.6 of the Criminal Code Act 1995 currently under review.

The Monitor explained that his role is not an intelligence oversight or compliance mechanism; instead it is an important law review and law reform function – similar to the Australian Law Reform Commission but more specialised and focused on Australia’s counter terrorism and national security legislation. The value of the INSLM is that its specialised review mechanisms that allow for consideration of the proportionality and appropriateness of the huge number of counterterrorism and national security laws in Australia.
